![]() ![]() I do think it has a lot of potential though. It's just a little lacking on content right now for the price. The vertical building is fun and different. Timberborn (9.1hrs) - I really enjoyed this, and loved the cute beaver idea. The latest update added a UI overhaul (which was desperately needed!) It actually has a reasonable amount of mod support too, which can alter the gameplay quite dramatically (or just give you some additional buildings to play with.) I would say is worth the money, and out of this list, would be the one I'd go for.Įndzone (18.1hrs) - Very similar to Surviving the Aftermath, neither of which have totally grabbed me, although I'd probably go for Aftermath over Endzone. Maybe I'll try again in sandbox mode or something at some point.įoundation - (58.7hrs played) - Still in early access but has enough content to play with. The slow research tree in Timberborn just kills the fun for me. I'm more used to games like Dwarf Fortress where there is no "tech tree" and you can build any type of structure from the very start. I wish the mechanics for moving beavers across the map to new areas were more flexible and that more of the necessary tech for traversing around the map was unlocked from the start. That middle stage where you are looking at hours and hours of just sitting there doing nothing while beavers research stuff sucks. It ends up just feeling like an arbitrary barrier before you can build your megadam or megaproject. It takes a shit ton of tech and construction just to get to your intended construction site. Each of these needs to be slowly researched one by one. Second, beavers also can't get from point A to point B without a path, so they need all these bridges, steps, and platforms of various sizes to get around. If the area were you want to build your project is too far away you are going to need to build a chain of like three different city centers to get there. First there are these pathing limits that stop beavers from going too far from a city center. It felt like I was spending 10-20 mins at a time with the game running on max speed just waiting for the beavers to do research and build stuff, with literally nothing to do but sit there watching. This where the game mechanics kind of fall apart. The main thing I wanted to do from that point was work on some kind of megaproject or something, like damming up a huge area or building some cool platforms on a cliff or something. It's not hard to survive once you figure out the basic mechanics, but once you have a little self sustaining village (maybe one or two hours of play max) there isn't much left to do. I think the problem for me was just the pacing of it. The game starts out fun but then quickly becomes an extreme slog. I started playing Timberborn but frankly I found it to be a bit boring before I even hit 10 hours.
